Insperity NYSE: NSP reported third-quarter results that exceeded the midpoint of its guidance ranges as its margin recovery plan drove higher gross profit per worksite employee and lower operating expenses.
Adjusted earnings per share were $0.22, compared with an adjusted loss of $0.20 per share in the third quarter of 2025. Adjusted EBITDA rose 210% year over year to $31 million. The company said total gross profit increased 6% to $207 million, while gross profit per worksite employee increased 8% to $225 per month.
“Our third quarter results mark a key milestone in our margin recovery plan,” Executive Vice President of Finance, Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer Jim Allison said. The increase in gross profit per worksite employee reversed the year-over-year declines reported through 2025 and the first half of 2026, he said.
Pricing Actions Support Margin Recovery
Insperity said its pricing and client-retention strategy was the primary driver of the improvement in gross profit metrics. The company said year-over-year pricing gains continued to accelerate during 2026, while client mix changes also supported its efforts to manage benefit costs.
Benefits cost per covered employee increased 3.7% from the prior-year quarter, in line with the company’s expectations. Allison said the company’s plan-design changes and new UnitedHealthcare contract terms, which took effect at the beginning of the year, also contributed to the results.
The company said workers’ compensation costs remained a partial offset to margin progress. Current-period workers’ compensation costs have been relatively stable, but favorable actuarial reserve adjustments tied to prior policy years declined from the prior-year quarter. Allison attributed the trend in part to a market-wide rise in claim severity and elevated healthcare costs.
Insperity said it has taken pricing actions in response to those market conditions and expects them to persist beyond the near term.
Operating expenses declined 5% year over year to $209 million, primarily because of lower corporate staffing levels and related compensation costs. Operating expenses associated with HRScale were generally in line with budget, the company said.
Average paid worksite employees totaled 307,265 during the quarter, down 1.8% from a year earlier. Allison said margin recovery efforts continued to weigh on new-client sales and client retention, though the company saw some improvement in net hiring within its existing client base.
Fall Campaign Seeks to Rebuild Growth
Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Paul Sarvadi said Insperity entered 2026 with a sequence of priorities: recover margin, rebuild growth momentum and establish a better balance between growth and profitability in 2027.
“That progress has involved trade-offs,” Sarvadi said, noting that pricing and client-selection decisions supporting the margin recovery effort have affected sales and retention.
The company said activity is increasing in its fall sales and client-renewal campaign. Marketing lead flow has improved, and Insperity reported a solid pipeline of mid-market HR360 and HRScale prospects. The number of business profiles, or opportunities to bid for services, increased each month during the third quarter, according to Sarvadi.
However, management cautioned that it remains early in the selling and renewal season. Price sensitivity, continued margin-recovery measures, market uncertainty and uncertainty surrounding the election could affect results, the company said.
HRScale remains on track to meet previously stated targets, with several thousand employees in implementation, Sarvadi said. Some mid-market and enterprise accounts have selected HR360 because it can be implemented more quickly to address HR service or benefits needs, while planning to transition to HRScale later, according to the company.
Company Outlines AI Strategy
Sarvadi said Insperity views artificial intelligence as a workplace transformation that could increase small and midsize businesses’ need for sophisticated HR support. The company is pursuing AI initiatives in technology development, internal workflows and client-facing tools.
Insperity recently announced its HR360 AI Agent, which is designed to help early-adopter clients find answers, navigate HR responsibilities and access guidance based on company-specific policies. The company also described planned conversational intelligence features that could enable clients to ask questions in everyday language and receive reports, visualizations and workforce insights.
Sarvadi said Insperity’s approach combines AI capabilities with internal data, client-specific policies, HR analytics and guidance from HR professionals. During the question-and-answer session, he said the company is encouraged by Workday’s AI initiatives and sees opportunities in that partnership, while also emphasizing Insperity’s own AI capabilities and historical client information.
