Oportun Financial NASDAQ: OPRT reported third-quarter 2026 results that marked a return to year-over-year revenue growth, with lower funding costs, improving credit performance and higher profitability supporting an increased full-year outlook.
Chief Executive Officer Doug Bland said revenue increased 3% from the prior-year period, the company’s first year-over-year revenue growth since the fourth quarter of 2023. Originations rose 12%, while interest expense declined 27% and net charge-off dollars fell 10% year over year.
“Q3 was a strong quarter, and it's clear that our momentum is building,” Bland said. He added that the company’s annualized GAAP return on equity reached 21.6%, its highest level since the first quarter of 2022.
Quarterly Results and Credit Trends
Oportun recorded net income of $23 million, compared with an $18 million lower result a year earlier, marking its eighth consecutive quarter of GAAP profitability. Diluted earnings per share were $0.45. Adjusted net income rose 38% year over year to $26 million, while adjusted EPS increased 31% to $0.51 from $0.39.
Total revenue was $246 million, up $7.6 million, or 3%, from the prior-year quarter. Chief Financial Officer Bill Franklin said the increase reflected higher originations and a 136-basis-point improvement in loan yield to 34.4%. The average daily principal balance was essentially flat, as a larger mix of returning members contributed to higher payment rates.
Third-quarter interest expense declined $15 million year over year to $41 million. Franklin attributed the reduction to balance-sheet optimization efforts, including corporate debt repayments and actions involving asset-backed securities notes and warehouse facilities.
Net revenue rose $22 million year over year to $127 million. Operating expenses increased 1% to $92 million, although the period included $5.6 million in non-recurring interest and fees tied to the resolution of a Mexico value-added tax refund. Higher direct-mail marketing spending also contributed to expenses and supported originations growth.
Adjusted EBITDA increased 37% year over year to $56 million. GAAP return on equity was 21.6%, while adjusted ROE was 24.4%, both within the company’s stated long-term target range of 20% to 28%.
Credit performance improved, with the annualized net charge-off rate falling to 10.6%, down 139 basis points sequentially and 121 basis points from a year earlier. The 30-plus-day delinquency rate declined 61 basis points year over year to 4.1%, which Franklin described as Oportun’s lowest third-quarter rate in five years.
Management attributed the improvement to a conservative credit posture, stronger collections, stable-to-improving loan vintages, growth in secured personal loans and a greater share of returning borrowers. Returning members represented 80% of third-quarter originations, compared with 70% in the prior-year period, and originations from returning members grew 25%. Secured personal loan originations rose 24% and accounted for 10% of the portfolio, up from 8% a year earlier.
Oportun Forward Strategy
Bland outlined the company’s “Oportun Forward” strategy, which centers on driving durable growth, building longer-lasting member relationships and delivering more predictable returns. Oportun estimates its total addressable market at 119 million U.S. adults, including approximately 42 million Latino adults and 77 million non-Latino adults. The company reported about 1.1 million active members.
The strategy calls for simplifying the company’s core lending and servicing operations, using proprietary data and credit experience more broadly across underwriting, pricing and servicing, and expanding the use of artificial intelligence to improve efficiency.
Management said it sees an opportunity to improve conversion among qualified applicants by matching them with products and terms suited to their affordability and credit profiles. Options could include risk-based pricing for unsecured loans, secured loans or guidance for applicants who are not currently eligible for credit.
Oportun launched risk-based pricing in July and described 2026 as a testing period. Bland said early results have been “very promising” from a consumer-demand perspective, though it remains too early to assess full credit performance. The company said it is not pursuing triple-digit APR lending.
For existing borrowers, Oportun plans to simplify applications and offer pricing or terms that better reflect responsible payment histories, while continuing to assess current creditworthiness and affordability.
Capital Position and Outlook
Oportun ended the quarter with a debt-to-equity ratio of 6.2 times, compared with 7.1 times a year earlier and a peak of 8.7 times two years ago. Since that peak, shareholders’ equity has increased $106 million, or 32%, while total debt has declined $134 million, or 5%, according to Franklin.
Unrestricted cash rose $77 million year over year to $181 million, while corporate debt fell $68 million to $135 million. The company has repaid $100 million of corporate debt since the facility was established in October 2024, generating $15 million in annualized run-rate interest expense savings. Franklin said management’s longer-term objective is to reduce leverage below six times and that it is evaluating options related to corporate debt carrying an approximately 15% expense.
For the fourth quarter, Oportun forecast total revenue of $247 million to $252 million, an annualized net charge-off rate of 11.05%, plus or minus 15 basis points, and adjusted EBITDA of $49 million to $54 million. The projected charge-off rate reflects expected year-end seasonality but would remain below the prior-year fourth-quarter level, management said.
For full-year 2026, the company maintained its expectation for mid-single-digit originations growth, now toward the higher end of that range. Oportun raised its expense outlook to a low-single-digit year-over-year increase, citing spending to support higher originations and restructuring-related severance costs.
- Total revenue: $955 million to $960 million
- Annualized net charge-off rate: 11.6%, plus or minus 10 basis points
- Adjusted EBITDA: $183 million to $188 million
- Adjusted net income: $80 million to $85 million
- Adjusted EPS: $1.60 to $1.70
Management said the outlook assumes Oportun maintains its tight credit posture amid inflation, uneven job creation, policy uncertainty and higher gas prices. Bland said the company has not observed deterioration in its internal credit metrics despite continued pressure on household budgets.
