Orion Group NYSE: ORN reported higher third-quarter revenue and adjusted EBITDA, citing active projects, strong equipment utilization, favorable operating conditions and execution across its marine and concrete operations. The company reiterated its full-year 2026 outlook and said it was tracking toward the upper end of each guided financial metric.
Third-quarter revenue rose 14% year over year to $256 million. Gross profit was $33 million, while GAAP net income totaled $5.5 million. Adjusted earnings were $0.12 per share, and adjusted EBITDA increased 37% from a year earlier to $18 million. Adjusted EBITDA margin expanded by 120 basis points, according to Chief Executive Officer Travis Boone.
Chief Financial Officer Alison Vasquez said consolidated gross margin was generally flat from the prior-year period, while selling, general and administrative expenses declined modestly. Borrowing costs increased, primarily because of the acquisition of Pacific Rock and Dredge, also known as McAmis, and revolver borrowings during the quarter.
Marine revenue grows as McAmis contributes
Marine revenue increased 13% to $161 million, supported by the Sargent Beach Coastal Restoration project, a port modernization project in Alabama, a bridge construction project in Texas and the opening of Pacific Rock and Dredge’s work window. Marine adjusted EBITDA was $19 million, or 11.6% of segment revenue.
Boone said Pacific Rock and Dredge made significant contributions to revenue, margins and cash conversion during the period. He said Orion had integrated the business onto its platform while retaining its entire workforce.
The company said marine demand remains strong, although the time between opportunity identification and project awards has lengthened. Orion is pursuing larger and more complex work through alternative delivery methods, which allow contractors to participate earlier in design, planning and scope-to-budget decisions.
In September, Orion was selected as the marine contractor for a fully funded federal design-to-budget project in the Pacific Northwest with an expected value to Orion of about $200 million. The company said it expects that work to enter backlog in mid-to-late 2027 after scope and engineering are finalized.
Orion was also selected for a naval-base wharf reconstruction project in Florida, smaller projects in Hawaii and the next reconstruction phase for the North Jetty of the Columbia River.
Navy contract vehicles broaden opportunity pipeline
The company said it was selected as a prime contractor for two NAVFAC Northwest Multiple Award Construction Contract vehicles. One is the $9 billion U.S. Navy VENTI MACC, which covers a range of major construction work in the Pacific Northwest. The other is a $700 million NAVFAC Northwest Waterfront MACC focused on construction, repair and modernization of waterfront infrastructure such as piers and wharves.
Boone said the contract vehicles give Orion a greater role in pursuing and delivering future task orders, though management said it has limited visibility into the timing and composition of awards under the newly won contracts. Vasquez said the awards were an important signal given the company’s focus on defense, resilience and national-security infrastructure.
At the end of the quarter, Orion had roughly $2 billion of submitted bids awaiting award, split approximately evenly between its concrete and marine businesses. That compares with just over $1 billion at the beginning of the year. Boone attributed the increase primarily to slower customer award cycles rather than weakening demand, adding that Orion’s win rate has remained steady.
Orion booked $179 million of new contract wins during the quarter and ended the period with approximately $645 million in backlog. Management said it would prefer to see submitted bids convert more quickly into backlog, but noted that project owners control award timing.
Concrete margins benefit from project execution
Concrete revenue increased 16% to $95 million, driven by geographic expansion, growing site-civil capabilities and favorable operating conditions. About half of the segment’s revenue during the quarter came from mission-critical projects, according to Vasquez.
Concrete adjusted EBITDA reached $10 million, representing an 11% margin. Vasquez said a handful of favorable project outcomes added about 2 percentage points to the margin. She characterized the quarter as exceptional and said normalized concrete EBITDA margins are currently expected to be in the mid-single digits, with a longer-term goal of consistently reaching the upper single digits.
Orion said its concrete bookings during the quarter came from all four operating regions and included concrete paving, new data-center campus phases, a college research building and a water treatment plant. In October, after the quarter closed, the company secured about $100 million in additional awards, including two mission-critical projects, site-civil work for a technology company, a cold-storage facility, a hospital and commercial buildings.
Boone said the company’s concrete business continues to generate approximately half of its revenue from mission-critical and data-center work, while also winning work in health care, higher education, cold storage and other markets. The company has expanded organically into Florida and Arizona, which management said helps diversify its customer base and reduce the effects of localized weather events.
Cash flow and outlook
Orion ended the quarter with net leverage of about 2.2 times. Vasquez said the company made progress converting working capital during the quarter and after quarter-end, but expects full-year free cash flow to be challenging because of fleet investments and capital expenditures.
Capital spending is expected to be toward the higher end of Orion’s $25 million to $35 million annual range, or near $30 million, according to Vasquez. Spending includes modernization of a derrick barge acquired in late 2025, which is expected to leave the shipyard in the fourth quarter and move to an assigned project.
The company reiterated its 2026 guidance:
- Revenue of $900 million to $950 million
- Adjusted EBITDA of $50 million to $54 million
- Adjusted EPS of $0.23 to $0.30
- Capital expenditures of $25 million to $35 million
Boone said Orion sees a multiyear infrastructure investment cycle across national defense, energy security, port modernization, coastal resilience, industrial reshoring and mission-critical development, and remains focused on project selection, risk management and execution.
