Through its midstream subsidiary MPLX, Marathon Petroleum owns and operates pipelines, storage terminals, gathering and processing systems, fractionation facilities and marine transportation assets. These operations support the movement and handling of crude oil, natural gas, natural gas liquids and refined products across the United States.

Marathon Petroleum was established as an independent company in 2011 through the spinoff of Marathon Oil’s refining and marketing operations, although its business has roots dating to the late 19th century.
